In this blog, I will write about a roll of film. Each week I plan to take a roll of film on my Minolta-370 camera and analyze both the moments I’ve captured and the process of capturing the photo. I am choosing film because, unlike some digital photography, film always tells the truth of that moment. Each photo of film is called an exposure, because the shutter door opens, and film that has never seen the light is exposed to a moment of life outside of the camera. The film, and my bargain Minolta from the Melrose Trading Post act as their own photoshop, warming and streaking the exposure with light to prove they were there too. Almost in spite of digital photography, the camera and the film add grain and meaning through chemicals and light that computers try to push into pixels. This blog is a love letter to film and a way to explore the possibilities an exposure holds.
This week I am cheating a little and using a roll of film from my winter break back home in San Diego. San Diego is a warm and light city that holds memories I relive every time I go home. I visit the same beach, Sunset Cliffs and take arguably the same photo every sunset, but film adds a new perspective to this view. Film photography is much more sensitive to light, adding a challenge and opportunity to play with the glowing and at times blinding light of the sun. This light alters the color of the water to give it deeper blue tones. The sun, even when not in the frame adds a golden and white shade to the sky and the waves. Digital photography may adjust the focus, but film allows the imperfections to quite literally shine through.

I have always been interested in film cameras and this post definitely made me more inclined to use one in the future! Your discussion of playing with light and allowing the imperfections to shine through was especially interesting to me. I’m curious, what time of day did you shoot these? Do you often pick a time to shoot, or just let the camera do it’s work when it’s convenient?
