Roll 3: Double Exposure

This week’s roll, (well two rolls) were a much greater challenge than I expected, and one I don’t think I passed.  I admittedly had a nonchalant attitude about a type of photography I had never tried before, but this week held issues beyond that. 

Roll 1: Roll 1 was not even worth the 12 dollars to develop the roll. None of the photos posted, are from this first Roll.  I clicked out the first round of exposures with no real direction or focus. I planned to take the first round of flowers or random, but strong structures that I would lay over the second round of the beach.  However, for some reason, the typical ease I feel when taking photos, was replaced with carelessness. I started to hate the film and on top of that, I over-rolled the film making it impossible to take a second exposure. So with a breath, I pressed on to Roll 2.         

Roll 2:  Roll 2 seemed to overcorrect for the directionless sins of Roll 1.  If Roll 1 had no focus, Roll 2 had only one focus; shamelessly my favorite focus and one I knew would photograph well: the sunset.  I snapped off beautiful but simple photos of the sunset at the surfer and dolphin haven Topanga beach. I overlaid the first exposures with more exposures of the beautiful sunset minimizing the double exposure effect.  The sunset left a light- streak looking slash through each photo. 

While these photos are beautiful this felt like a failure at my ability to take double exposure.  I feel like I failed these photos with a lack of thought and planning that I now know double exposure needs. The only photo I consider remotely successful is a combination of exposure 1, my boyfriend driving, and exposure 2, a dog on the sand.  Looking at this image however, I see a plan for my next post. 

 My next roll will be broken down as such: my first round of exposures will be people (or dogs, maybe only dogs if I’m lucky) and the second round, the ol’ reliable beach sunset.  On a final note I am only looking to improve my own experience taking and looking at this film, skill has no matter to me.
